Smithers Mourns Death of Bill Goodacre

Tributes are pouring in for former Smithers Town Councillor Bill Goodacre, who passed away over the weekend at Bulkley Lodge in Smithers.

In announcing his death on Facebook, Mayor Taylor Bachrach said the 67-year-old Goodacre was "a quiet presence around the council table -- and a tireless ally for indigenous people, especially the Witsuwit’en".

Bachrach says the town's flag has been lowered to half-staff to mark Bill’s passing.

Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen said it was Goodacre who first convinced him to run for political office, calling him "a champion of those without a voice and a true advocate for reconciliation".

The former New Democrat MLA is also being eulogized by current MLA's Doug Donaldson and Jennifer Rice, among many others.

Goodacre's son-in-law --- Juno-award-winning singer/songwriter Alex Cuba --- called him a man of true values.

Last fall, Goodacre was awarded the town's highest honour -- the "Freedom of the Municipality" award.
