New Mine near Vanderhoof Approved

Federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna has announced the proposed Blackwater Gold Project southwest of Vanderhoof can proceed.

Yesterday's announcement comes after an environmental assessment concluded the project is not likely to cause significant environmental effects as long as mitigation measures are taken.

New Gold will be required to meet 172 conditions designed to reduce or eliminate potential environmental effects, including harm to wetlands and fish, wildlife and species at risk, resources used by Indigenous people and cultural heritage.

The proposed $1.8-billion open-pit gold and silver mine project -- 110 kilometres southwest of Vanderhoof -- could create an estimated 1,500 jobs during construction and almost 500 jobs during operations.
