Search and rescue crews from Kitimat and Terrace joined RCMP, Fire Department members and others in looking for a man who disappeared while boating on the Kitimat River Saturday afternoon.

RCMP say the call came in just before 12:30 in the afternoon that the the 39-year-old man, believed to be from Alberta, was in an inflatable boat which capsized.

According to information from Terrace Search and Rescue, a group of anglers had encountered a logjam downstream of their launch point at the upper highway bridge.

Four Terrace Swiftwater rescue technicians attending a community event at Lakelse Lake were able to respond quickly and join the Kitimat team -- and they were assisted by a search helicopter.

Despite the extensive search effort conducted by Terrace and Kitimat SAR teams, the missing person was not found.
The RCMP are advising the public that it is not safe to launch off of the 18 mile bridge site at this time -- a prefered location would be to use  the “first washout” or at Cable car.

Police are also reminding boaters to make sure to always wear life jackets.
