CIHL: Rupert Rampage move closer to top; Hazelton Wolverines on winning streak

The Prince Rupert Rampage moved a bit closer to first place in the Central Interior Hockey League standings, thanks to a 6-3 win over the Kitimat Ice Demons Saturday night at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre.

The Rampage trail the league-leading Terrace River Kings by four points, but have a game in hand, setting the stage for a showdown between the two teams this Saturday in Prince Rupert -- as the city prepares for the national spotlight as it will host Rogers Hometown Hockey this coming weekend.

Meantime, the Hazelton Wolverines are suddenly one of the hottest teams in the CIHL.

The Wolverines, who began the season with five straight losses before winning in Smithers two weekends ago, are now on a three-game winning streak, following a weekend sweep of their games in the Cariboo.

On Saturday, they edged the Williams Lake Stampeders 4-3, and they followed that up Sunday afternoon with a convincing 8-1 victory over the Kangaroos in Quesnel.

The Smithers Steelheads also travelled to the Cariboo over the weekend, but weren't as fortunate, losing 3-2 in Quesnel Saturday night and dropping a 4-1 decision in Williams Lake Sunday.
