An upcoming event, to held in Terrace to support and raise awareness for family literacy is fast approaching. It has been celebrated for approx. five years and hosted by a collective group of organizations, who want to raise awareness about the many resources available,  to the residents of Terrace, that support family health and life long learning activities for the whole family.

This year, the event will be held on Saturday, February 1st, from 1 to 3 pm at the Skeena Mall. Terrace Public Library Programs Assistant, Carolyn DeFreitas, says there are several activities for all to enjoy.

"We will be doing things like painting children's faces; there will be income tax appointment sign up assistance, there will be a therapy dog on-site, there will be books that are given away, there are dental program information and a whole bunch of parent and child activities."

DeFreitas says that there are many ways to practice and encourage literacy within the family home that doesn't just involve reading a book.

"Oral storytelling is a very powerful way of teaching kids how to really hone their listening skills, writing a letter or an email, saying rhymes together, tongue twisters, songs and music are really powerful."

Those who attend will have the opportunity to obtain a free book to promote learning.

"Books will be given away from the library's booth. We will have children's, young adults and adult books, fiction and non-fiction. There is another group that's giving away books as well from the Dolly Parton imagination library. Those would be all news books; the library books could be donations that we have received our items that we have withdrawn from our own collection. There will be used and new and gently used."

She emphasized that having conversations and listening to your children creates a special bond within the family and its also the foundation of language learning and of literacy development.
