Organizers of the fifth annual "Daffodil Dash" in Smithers are beaming, as they tally up the proceeds from this past weekend's Canadian Cancer Society fundraising event.

Over 100 teams and individuals took part, and raised over 24-thousand dollars Sunday -- and that doesn't include the proceeds from the silent auction and barbecue held in conjuction with the event.

Cancer patient Mark Schelter, who was diagnosed with the disease last fall, was among the participants, saying his time at the Treatment Centre in Prince George, as well as the adjacent Kordyban Lodge, left him with a tremendous appreciation for the work that they do there.

"They all felt like my friends, these people genuinely cared, they weren't just asking you how you were feeling just 'cause they had to, it was pretty special -- it sounds crazy to say because I couldn't wait to get back to Smithers and back to my family and back to normal but it was sad to leave after seven weeks -- I felt like I was leaving all these friends I made," he said.

The Daffodil Dash emerged to replace the Smithers Relay for Life a few years ago, and is a bit more modest than the 24-hour relay had become.

But Grant Harris -- one of the organizers of the event -- says it still has a big impact on the community -- and help generate awareness, and funding, for the Canadian Cancer Society.

"There are so many local people touched by that society, in the name of research -- for example there's Kordyban Lodge in Prince George, and the Cancer Clinic in Prince George -- there are so many local people there that benefit," he said.

Harris also said numerous local businesses chipped in with substantial donations -- and those contributions help to ensure that the Daffodil Dash will be around for years to come.
