Distracted Driving Blamed for Highway Crash

Kathy Brookes

RCMP say distracted driving was the cause of a serious collision on Highway 16 last night east of New Hazelton.

Police say the driver of an east-bound pickup was distracted by her cellphone when her vehicle crossed the centre line and side-swiped a west-bound transport truck.

The woman suffered serious -- not not life-threatening -- injuries.

The transport truck driver was not hurt.

The crash happened around 9 o'clock last night and the highway was closed for a time afterward.

RCMP say the pickup driver was issued a ticket for driving without consideration which carries a fine of $196 and 6 points.

The police note distracted driving is responsible for killing 78 people in B.C. every year and the outcome of this collision could have been far worse.
