Stewart RCMP and members of Terrace Search-and-Rescue have been checking a remote area north of Stewart, after reports of an empty kayak and backpack spotted floating in the Nass River yesterday.

Both items were spotted by a crew working in a helicopter over the river south of the Bell Irving Bridge, but a search of the area turned up no trace of a person in distress.

Terrace's Water Rescue Team did an aerial search yesterday but came up empty, although a backpack was recovered from below the old Nass River Bridge on Highway 37.

SAR volunteers are out again today, along with an RCMP Air Services plane.

Constable Rob Gardner says there have been no reports of missing persons or calls of distress -- but if you spotted someone launching a kayak from around the Bell Irving Bridge, or have dash cam footage of that area from yesterday, contact the Stewart detachment.

The Stewart RCMP is looking for the publics help on a file received at 3:40 pm on Wednesday, August 28th.

The Stewart RCMP received a call from a crew working with a helicopter over the Nass river, south east from the Bell Irving bridge, when they saw an empty Kayak and back pack floating in the river.

The crew did a search of the area, but did not locate any persons in distress.

Search and Rescue was called out and a swift water rescue team from Terrace BC conduced an aerial search Wednesday evening, however the Kayak, backpack or person was not located.

The search area is in a very remote and rugged canyon that is not accessible by vehicle or foot.

We have not received a missing persons call or distress call from this area, stated Stewart RCMP Acting Detachment Commander Rob GARDNER, however if anyone saw someone launching a kayak around the Bell Irving Bridge, or has dash cam footage from this area yesterday, August 28th, 2019, please contact us.

It is possible this person may have notified someone of their plans or had been seen traveling to this area with a white GMC crew cab pick up and kayak.

If you have any information that can assist with this investigation, please contact the Stewart RCMP at 250-636-2233 and cite file number 2019-284
