The federal Liberals have announced their candidate for the upcoming election in October.

Dave Birdi was officially introduced as the party's candidate, during a noon hour event in Fort St James, where Birdi and his family have lived since the 1970's.

Birdi is promising to bring a "top-down" approach to his candidacy.

Birdi is the fifth declared candidate in the riding -- joining the N-D-P's Taylor Bachrach, Claire Rattee of the Conservative Party, Rod Taylor of the Christian Heritage Party and Jody Craven of the People's Party.

The riding has been held since 2004 by New Democrat Nathan Cullen, who announced in March he would not run for re-election.

The federal election is scheduled for October 21st.
