Aggressive fire behaviour was observed on three large fires burning in the Lakes District yesterday, prompting increased Evacuation Orders and Alerts from the Bulkley-Nechako Regional District.

Board Chair Bill Miller says fires burning near Purvis, Nadina, and Island Lakes continue to grow -- and there's now the Torkelson Lake Fire burning along the northwestern shore of Babine Lake, prompting a new Evacuation Order north of Smithers Landing.

The Island Lake wildfire, which is in the Francois Lake Provincial Park area, was estimated at 2200 hectares yesterday and is growing.

The Nadina Lake Wildfire, southwest of Houston, also showed aggressive fire behaviour.

It's estimated at 5600 hectares in size.

Crews and equipment were pulled off both fires yesterday (Monday) afternoon due to extreme fire behaviour.

The Shovel Lake Wildfire, northwest of Endako,  had a small excursion on the northwest corner yesterday, but it was held by helicopters and ground crews.
