Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Minister Doug Donaldson is getting some help with the appointment today of a Parliamentary Secretary for his ministry.

A government news release says Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon will assist Donaldson, in working with communities and stakeholders in the Interior as the forest industry faces significant challenges.

Kahlon will also continue his work on human rights and anti-racism.

Donaldson has faced criticism recently over the NDP government's consultations on the province's caribou recovery strategy, as well as its response to sawmill closures and production cuts in the forest industry.

Liberal Forestry Critic John Rustad is calling on Premier John Horgan to replace Donaldson, rather than give him an assistant.

Rustad says Horgan has "assigned a former N.D.P. political director to babysit his ineffective Forestry Minister just two weeks after demoting him by removing his responsibility for wildfire recovery."

Also today, Premier Horgan appointed Nanaimo MLA Sheila Malcolmson as parliamentary secretary for environment and added multiculturalism to Anne Kang's responsibilities for seniors.

North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice remains Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Preparedness.
