Smithers RCMP say this week's collision between a grader and a CN train near Quick serves as a stark reminder of the need for all drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, to never make any assumptions, and to exercise caution, prior to crossing any rail line.

Police say the grader operator is recovering in hospital in Vancouver, after his vehicle was hit by a trail at a level crossing on Lawson Road Tuesday.

RCMP say the westbound train was unable to stop in time and pushed the grader a few hundred meters down the track.

A team of first responders, including the BC Ambulance Service, Smithers Fire Department, Telkwa Fire Department, and the Bulkley Valley Search and Rescue team were able to remove the injured grader operator from the machine and transport him to Bulkley Valley District Hospital.

WorkSafe BC and the RCMP are investigating the collision.
