Inter-City Bus Funding Extended

People across northern B.C. can count on an inter-city bus service for at least another year.

The B.C. Transportation Ministry says the provincial and federal governments will share the cost of the BC Bus North service through March 2021, each providing about $1 million and Diversified Transportation continuing to run the long-haul coach operation.

Some fares will be adjusted this year however to better reflect the length of the trip. For instance, a ride from Smithers to Prince George will cost a bit more than a ride from Smithers to Terrace.

The updated fare schedule is expected to be posted on the service's website on Friday.

BC Bus North offers four routes -- between Prince George and Prince Rupert -- Prince George and Valemount -- Prince George and Fort St John -- and Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson.

The province says it has provided rides for almost 9,000 people since it was launched in 2018, after Greyhound shut down its privately-operated bus routes in Western Canada.
