Empty kayak prompts search of Kitimat River -- with a happy ending

John Crawford

Kitimat Search and Rescue volunteers were busy over the weekend, after an abandoned kayak was spotted in some logs on the Kitimat River just below Cablecar Subdivision late Friday afternoon.

Three KSAR members flew over the river by helicopter while two other members joined with Kitimat Hatchery staff in the hatchery's jet boat, searching the river as far upstream as the Wedeene River.

They stood down at around 7:20 Friday evening, after finding no signs of anyone.

But the search has a happy ending.

The owner of the kayak phoned the RCMP after spotting a post on social media,  saying he and a couple of buddies were kayaking on the Kitimat River about two weeks ago when his boat flipped and he lost it under a log jam.

KSAR is reminding everyone to please wear a personal floatation device when drifting or paddling on the Kitimat River.
