A Kitimat man is missing, after falling into the Kitimat River and being swept away while fishing Saturday afternoon.

RCMP say the incident happened just before 6pm in an area about eight kilometres north of Kitimat, at the end of Powerline Road.

The 21-year-old man is described as 6'9" tall and weighing 220 lbs.

He has brown hair and a beard.

His name has been removed at this time, at the request of his family and the RCMP.

He was last seen wearing brown chest waders, green boots, white hat, white T-shirt and camouflage hoody.

Search-and-rescue teams from Kitimat and Terrace, Kitimat Fire and Rescue and a local helicopter joined Kitimat RCMP and the RCMP dive team in searching for the missing man.

Kitimat Victim Services has also been assisting.

RCMP are advising people to wear personal floatation devices while fishing, saying that water levels are rising, due to recent rains and melting snowpack in the mountains -- and that's creating stronger currents and deeper water.
