Evacuation Orders/Alerts Expanded in Lakes District

The Bulkley Nechako Regional District is expanding its Evacuation Orders and Alerts in the Lakes District as several wildfires continue to grow.

The latest evacuation order was issued Tuesday night near the Gilmore Lake Wildfire, which was discovered earlier in the day southwest of Topley.

It's suspected that fire was caused by human activity, and is estimated at 110 hectares.

In all, six Evacuation Orders are in place in the Bulkley Nechako Regional District -- they also cover fires near Nadina Lake, Verdun Mountain, Island Lake, Purvis Lake and Torkelsen Lake at the western edge of Babine Lake.

There are also several Evacuation Alerts in place, meaning people need to be ready to leave the area on short notice.

Maps of the effected areas can be found on the Regional District website: http://www.rdbn.bc.ca/

Regional District Board Chair Bill Miller says it's important to obey the orders to leave as quickly as you can.

"We do evacuation orders on the recommendation of Wildfire, and they do it by the best information that they have and they don't do it lightly either so when you get that information that you grab your important stuff and get yourself and your family and your pets and those kinds of things out of the area --
there is imminent risk if an evacuation order is put in place," he said.

People impacted are asked to register at the ESS Evacuation Centre in Burns Lake.
