Lax Kw'alaams Principal Fired As School Finances Investigated

The principal of the Coast Tsimshian Academy in Lax Kw'alaams has been fired as financial irregularities are investigated.

In a news release Friday, School Board Chair Harvey Russell Jr. says auditors recently notified the board of financial irregularities and the decision to terminate Kelly Rambeau's employment was made in order to protect the school's assets.

Russell says the board has retained legal counsel to help resolve the matter.

On Wednesday last week, a letter on the school's Facebook announced Skye Mitchell has been appointed interim principal and Cora Barak is interim vice principal at the K-to-12 school, prompting numerous questions from community members.

The Coast Tsimshian Academy had about 140 students enrolled last year.

Rambeau was welcomed as the new principal in September 2014.
