The Metlakatla Wilderness Trail is on the list of projects receiving a portion of over $500,000 of funding from the Northern Development Initiative Trust.

The trail closed in 2015 due to a number of safety concerns following a severe storm, but in a news release yesterday it was announced that the Metlakatla Wilderness Trail should re-open by next spring.

The total funding from Northern Development is $79,094 and will go towards repairing the three suspension bridges and the 72-foot viewing tower.

The 21 kilometre trail is scheduled to re-open in May of 2020.

Other projects that received funding include the runway rehabilitation project for the North Peace Regional Airport, the Williams Lake Band Council received funds to renovate the Elizabeth Grouse Gymnasium, and additional money was given the Kitimat-Stikine Regional District to add bleachers, floor coverings and other assests at the new Upper Skeena Recreation Centre.
