Habs Alumni Visit Kitimat to Help Kids Get Involved In Sports

Helping kids who can't afford it get involved in sports is the goal behind a fund-raising hockey game in Kitimat tomorrow night, pitting the local Guns and Hoses team against the Montreal Canadiens Alumni.

LNG Canada's Susannah Pierce says her company is co-hosting the game, along with the District of Kitimat, because they believe in encouraging physical activity -- and also to generate some fun in the community.

"We look at how we contribute to the community and again looking at the opportunities that can be provided by games such as this and also providing for training camps during the day, the free swim the following Monday, looking at what we do in the summer time to make camps more affordable for those who can't afford it, it really just goes to our core beliefs that sports is vital for health -- both physical and mental health -- and we want to be a part of the community,' she said.

She said it's especially important to reach children -- and their families.

"We recognized how important it is to have sports in the community, not only from the perspective of getting people to come out and watch sports but actually to participate in sports -- and so for LNG Canada, a lot of us have children, live in the community, and we want to make sure that people are recognizing the importance of sports both in terms of doing a family thing together and also just sports in general for keeping people health."

The game begins Saturday at 6:30 at Tamitik, but there will also be a meet-and-greet autograph session with the Habs Alumni from 2:00 to 3:30pm in the George Thom Memorial Room.

The Habs Alumni are coached by retired all-star Steve Shutt;  the full roster is below (subject to change).
