Pacific Storm Continues to Cause Headaches in Northwest

John Crawford

Weather warnings remain in place for much of the northwest this morning, as a strong Pacific frontal system continues to cross the region.

Environment Canada has issued a Winter storm warning for the Stewart area, where the system is producing heavy snow -- and hazardous winter conditions are expected.

The weather office says Stewart could receive an additional 5 to 10 centimetres this morning.

For Terrace, Kitimat and Smithers, a Freezing rain warning is in effect.

Freezing rain expected to continue this morning.

Precipitation falling through a warm layer aloft coupled with sub-zero surface temperatures has led to a prolonged periods of freezing rain.

It's expected to change over to rain later this morning as temperatures gradually rise above freezing.

A further 5 millimetres of freezing rain is possible before the changeover.
