Tuesday morning at 9 AM marked the official opening of the nomination period for the 2018 Municipal Election.

Those wishing to run for City Council, the School Board or the Regional District have until 4 PM on September 14th to file their official nomination papers.

Staff at the District of Kitimat recently held an information session for anyone looking to run for Mayor or council, but they're still prepared to provide additional information to people picking up their nomination papers over the next two weeks.

"We will explain the time commitment that it takes to actively participate in council. It's more than just attending the weekly or by- weekly council meetings. There's appointments to a various number of community organizations that the mayor and council decide on those appointments. There's some travel and education that's involved as well, so it is a large commitment." Said Kitimat's Head Elections Officer Debbie Godfrey.

Candidate nomination packages for Mayor and Council are available at City Hall or online.

Godfrey says as of today, approximately 18 people have picked up nomination papers from the District of Kitimat.

Something new- province wide this year is: if you send your forms in via email or fax you have until September 21st to file nomination papers.
