Support Local Businesses This Plaid Friday

Although the day is traditionally known as Black Friday, here in Northern BC the big deals leading up to American Thanksgiving are better known as Plaid Friday.

Plaid Friday is an initiative started by Love Northern BC, under Northern Development Initiative Trust to promote the vast array of local businesses across the North.

NDIT communications officer Katherine Benny oversees the Love Northern BC program and says the switch from black to plaid is a representation of the area. "Plaid Friday is intended to be a gentler alternative to Black Friday, because black always sounds kind of scary. And we know that, well we're Northerners, we wear plaid shirts. Plaid shirts are cozy and colourful and wonderful just like the region that we all live in."

Benny says more than 30 communities are part of Love Northern BC.

Plaid Friday is being observed in Prince Rupert with a handful of local business marking down their products. Love Prince Rupert spokesperson, Veronika Stewart, says shopping local keeps money within the community which makes it vital in community growth.

"When the city did our survey of downtown and what we could do to improve it and what people want to see downtown, we really did hear from a lot of people that they want new retail options or a variety of retail options. And without supporting those retail options they can't stay alive, so we've got to make sure we're giving back to local businesses and buying from them in order to make them a viable business and keep Prince Rupert's retail market thriving."

Stewart, also a member of city staff, says the city has a little incentive for people to put on their plaid and hit up some local shops, "If you do shop today and you're wearing plaid, you can take a selfie of yourself, tag the city on Facebook and hashtag plaid friday to be entered to win a draw for a local gift basket with a lot of really good local gifts in it."
