AltaGas celebrated the opening of the Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal Tuesday with partners from around the world.

The terminal, known as RIPET is the first of its kind on Canada's west coast and opens Canadian natural gas producers to markets overseas.

RIPET will deliver 20 to 30 cargos per year with a 10 day shipping time to Asia.

Dan Woznow, Senior Vice President of Energy Exports for AltaGas, is excited to see the project come to fruition and says the new terminal is history in the making.

"Historically, Canada's been a resource based country and we've been limited in some of the commodities. This is stretching that and growing that, and it's really going to set our footprint around the globe," he said.

AltaGas's Japanese Partner, Astomos, named a vessel the "Maple Gas" to honour Canada and its heritage, and Woznow says that as the ship travels the waters people will know Canada is a new player.
