Smithers Property Crime Spike

Kathy Brookes

Smithers RCMP are warning the public about an increase in property crimes in the area recently.

Police say it's been happening in the last week both in Smithers and nearby rural communities.

In Smithers, RCMP are investigating multiple cases of thieves targetting unlocked vehicles. Items such as coins, I-D cards and electronic chargers have been stolen. In some cases, the culprits also tried to steal the vehicle itself.

Meanwhile, from Witset to Quick, rural properties, especially those with workshops and tool sheds, have been targetted.

Police say offenders are using vehicles, at times with trailers, to steal tools and larger items like generators and air compressors. ATVs and dirt bikes have also been targeted.

Police would appreciate hearing about any suspicious activity.

RCMP are also urging property owners to lock up, properly store any firearms, not keep keys inside a vehicle, and have someone check their property if they're away.
