Stewart Port Gets Federal Investment

The port at Stewart is getting a major boost from the federal government.

Transport Minister Marc Garneau has announced $13.1 million for a project to increase capacity at the Stewart World Port.

Bulk loading conveyor systems and power and control facilities will be installed.

A news release says the project will help it move more export commodities such as bulk wood, mineral and agricultural products from northern B.C., Yukon, Alberta and Saskatchewan, reducing trucking and shipping distances and green house gas emissions.

It notes an estimated 275 jobs will also be created in the region during construction.
