Demonstration Against Lighthouse De-staffing Planned For Prince Rupert
Senate Committee to hold meetings
A demonstration is being planned for this Saturday in Prince Rupert, as a Senate committee examining lighthouses pays a visit.
The federal government is planning to destaff several west coast lighthouses, including North Coast stations at Langara Point, Green Island, Triple Island and Bonilla Island.
North Coast New Democrat M-L-A Gary Coons says lightkeepers are the "eyes and ears of the coast", and automation simply won't provide the same service.
The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans -- which includes former Olympic skier Nancy Greene Raine -- is scheduled to meet with regional representatives and local residents on Friday and Saturday in Prince Rupert.
However, many area groups have complained of the short notice given for the meetings -- and the fact that they're "by invitation only".
Next Saturday morning's demonstration is to take place outside the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre.
