BV School District Looking for New Superintendent

District also announces disposal of Chandler Park School site

The Bulkley Valley School District is looking for a new superintendent.

Bev Young is resigning as of February 28th, in order to become superintendent of the Okanagan-Similkameen School District in March.

Young began working in the Bulkley Valley district in 1988, as a teacher at Chandler Park Middle School in Smithers.  In later years, she was vice principal at Houston Secondary and Smithers Secondary Schools, and then principal at Telkwa Elementary, Twain Sullivan Elementary and Houston Secondary Schools.

She took over as District Superintendent in January of 2008.

School Board Chair Les Kearns said Young's contributions to education in the Bulkley Valley are immense, and she'll be sorely missed.

School District 54 has also announced the Education Ministry has approved the disposal of ownership of the Chandler Park Middle School site to the Town of Smithers and the Office of the Wet'suwet'en.

The transfer of title is subject to the town and the Wet'suwet'en concluding a joint ownership agreement on community use of the site.

Discussions are expected to begin in the near future.

Office of the Wet'suwet'en Executive Director Debbie Pierre says the hereditary chiefs would like to see the site developed as a community centre, providing child, youth and family services and other community outreach programs.

Mayor Cress Farrow calls it an example of how the town and the Wet'suwet'en Nation can work together for the good of the community.
