Camping restrictions removed at Hirsch Creek Park

Kitimat council approves changes to increase accessibility

Hirsch Creek Park will be more accessible when it re-opens next May.

Kitimat council has approved a change of signage at the park which would remove a prohibition on overnight camping.

Instead, signs will be posted indicating that the park is an "unpatrolled wilderness area."

District staff say it's the best way of dealing with illegal camping at Hirsch Creek Park, which often occurs when campsites at Radley Park are sold out.

The change means accessibility will be the same as any other part of Crown land.

Hirsch Creek Park became a "day use only" facility last year, due to safety risks posed by old growth trees exposed to high winds.
