Out With Rainy June in With Sunny July

7/4/2012

With flood warnings, a slow melting snow pack and rain falling almost every day in June, for those looking to do summery things it was difficult, but now four days into July it doesn't look like those rain clouds are going just yet. Mountain Weather Services Senior Meteorologist, Ova Uwe says, “For June we were here in Smithers 60% above what is normal or the average for June so I do believe climatologically expect around 48 mm and we are almost at 80 mm so it significantly above normal but at the same time we expect a moisture bump to come up in June and to come down again for July and August."

For Riverside Golf Course Owner Delee Yuen June usually is a rough month, “June is terrible spring weather of course you know, we expect it to be a  little warmer it was lots of rain cloudy, it does affect business a bit, not too much, but it does have an effect on us yes."

According to the Smithers visitor information centre tourist tend to brave the wet weather, and go experience if not all, most of the things on their ‘to do’ list.  “I think it impacts the locals the most, locals tend to stay closer to home maybe spend a few nights out at a provincial park, but then come back. If you are traveling from further away people who are traveling from Europe or the United States they tend to be okay with  the rain often they have a trailer or camper or something so they are ready for whatever the weather does."

Even with all of this wet weather, there is still anticipation for a hot weekend. Yuen explains, “I'm hoping for better weather and I think it's going to come a matter of fact starting next weekend it is supposed to be sunny and I think people are going to be out here with shorts.”

Uwe says “People will be wondering until the 2nd or third of July will summer ever come, but then certainly by the end of July and all of August most of September especially climatologically up here we will be fine.  This is the usual pattern but it’s intensively strong right now.”

Unfortunately there is a 40% chance of rain for tomorrow but Friday is looking like it will be 19 degrees and sunny.
