8/7/2012

Kitimat Mayor Joanne Monaghan wiped tears of joy from her cheeks.. as Kitimat councillors presented her with a Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal at council last night.

Councillor Corrine Scott announced the award at the presenters' podium.

The presentation surprised Monaghan, who seemed to be one of the only people in the room who didn't know the presentation was coming.

"I didn't know it was (tonight) until she started talking, and then I thought.. "Oh, well.." It was a shock, very pleasant surprise, and I just want to thank the community for it."

Councillor Scott's speech detailed Monaghan's accomplishments.. including serving as President on all municpal elected officals organizations.

"Joanne is the only elected official that I know of.. that has served as president on all municipal elected officials organizatuions, locally, provincially, and federally. She was the first woman to hold position of president of UBCM for two consecutive terms."

Monaghan is one of 60 thousand Canadians being recognized this year for their contributions to Canada with the Diamond Jubilee medal, which commemorates Queen Elizabeth's 60th year on the throne.
