Port Edward School Lease Finalized With School District

The Prince Rupert school board held a special open meeting last night, primarily to discuss leasing agreements for the new Port Edward School.

The board had previously decided to close the current school at the end of this month, but since the new school won’t be ready until early next year, the municipality will be leasing it from the district.

“Port Edward is interested in maintaining control of that building and once we stop using it and the other two lease agreements involve them now leasing that building to have control over what happens to it and maintenance of it in the future,” said Cam McIntyre, Secretary Treasurer.

Even though the new school won’t be open until January, the lease is set to begin on September 1st and will run for twenty years.

On top of the leases, the board also approved a Capital Project Bylaw of 500 thousand dollars to go towards the construction of the new school.
