Many who live in Smithers say they live there because they want to. Smithers Town Council heard a delegation at their last council meeting about the idea of Blue Zones which is a part in the world where people live longer and happier lives.
There may not be many Blue Zones in the world but some local residents believe that Smithers is on the right track to become one. Blue ZoneSupporter Jim Senka says, “The meeting place on Main street which they are developing right now the walking trails support for organizations such as the co-housing group in town here... A lot of those things lend themselves into increased interaction and I think they are on the way with that and I really think that is a wonderful thing.”
The delegation was brought to council to talk about how living in a Blue Zone helps with people's health, Senka explains, “To make people more aware these are the right kind of goals we should be pursuing without lives you know we should be thinking about living longer and living healthier to having stress take over our lives... .”
Senka is a firm believer in Blue Zones and gave each council member the book Thrive finding Happiness the Blue Zone way which outlines 4 different communities
Mayor Taylor Bachrach says, “We can look to this Blue Zone idea...It was a interesting delegation to council I haven't seen that since being mayor, almost a philosophical discussion will make this community stand out as one of the healthiest place to live where people have the healthiest happiest lives.”
