Rivers Day

9/27/2012

Telkwa will be recognizing this year’s Rivers Days as well as many other communities around the World.  Rivers Day is traditionally held on the last Sunday of September.  Communities all participate differently, some by cleaning the river and others just spending the day on the river.  Rivers Day in Telkwa starts in the morning and goes into the afternoon. Telkwa Rivers Day Co-Organizer Nadia Nowak explains, “People are participating in the flotilla and that starts at the historic quick bridge and then it will come down here to Eddy Park and after that there will be a free wild salmon BBQ.”

Outdoor Recreation Council Executive Director Geremy McCall says that is what typically in communities in BC,” A salmon BBQ is just an absolutely typical event and fun for the families by their river side park in Prince George... That's what I would say is the most typical event but there are other clean up event or as I say that paddling even that I'm participating in there is all over.”

Organizers feel that Rivers Day plays an important role in recognizing what the river means to our community.  McCall explains, “Because sometimes our rivers tend to get a little neglected and sometimes there are things affecting our rivers that people aren't really aware of.”

Nowak says, “Rivers play such an important role in this region particularly for the salmon fishery as well as the tourism economy here and cultural and way of life in this region so it's really important that we celebrate our rivers as well as raise awareness that we need to protect our rivers.”  To find out more on Rivers Day in your community you can visit go www.commons.bcit.ca/worldriversday
