Cops check speed in school zones

10/16/2012

School has been back in session for more than a month now, but local police are finding drivers aren't heeding the school zone speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour.

So Prince Rupert RCMP have been patrol on to make sure drivers are taking due care and slowing down during the times children could be present.

Constable Geoff Tisdall wants to make sure everyone is aware that school zones are in effect.

"today we went out today and set up a speed zone to see what kind of speeds people are traveling through the school zones in and in just an hour and 45 minutes, we issued 13 tickets to people who were speeding in school zones."

During an afternoon operation, police stopped another dozen cars, many getting just warnings for being slightly over the limit, though others who were more aggressive have been slapped with a hundred and 96-dollar fine.
