Avalanche Victim Identified

Telkwa surveyor killed near Stewart

10/24/2012

A Telkwa man has been identified as the surveyor killed in an avalanche near Stewart yesterday.

The B.C. Coroners Service says 50-year-old Pat Lawrence Desmarais was struck by a slide while working with another man near Sulphurets Creek, a remote spot about 50 kilometres north of Stewart.

The pair were taking GPS readings as part of mining survey work.

Both men were hit by the avalanche, but Desmarais' partner managed to extricate himself.

Desmarais was swept away by the avalanche, falling about 300 metres down the steep slope, and died at the scene.

Both the Coroners Service and Office of the Chief Inspector of Mines are investigating his death.
