SCHOOL CLOSURES, HIGHWAY CLOSURES, ETC TODAY

3PM UPDATE:   ALL NORTHWEST HIGHWAYS OPEN AGAIN 

DRIVE BC REPORTS: 

High Avalanche Hazard Highway 16 Both directions - High Avalanche Hazard 13 km east of Prince Rupert to 35 km west of Terrace is now clear. Updated on Thu Feb 8 at 2:56 pm PST. (ID# 273191)

 

7:30AM UPDATE:   FROM SCHOOL DIST 82 COAST MOUNTAINS:

A new development …. please note that our Bear Valley School in Stewart will remain open today, February 8.  All other CMSD82 schools will be closed today, February 8 to due conditions of the highways, side roads and sidewalks. 

 

7:30AM UPDATE:   FROM NORTHWEST COMMUNITY COLLEGE:

Based on road condition reports from Hazelton and Smithers, the decision has been made for those campuses to remain closed until 11 a.m. We will re-evaluate at that point as to the rest of the day. An update will be sent as soon as the situation becomes more clear.

 

The Terrace campus will be open today. The main arteries in Terrace have been cleared the parking lots are also clear in Terrace.

All schools within the Coast Mountains School District will be closed today, due to the conditions of highways, sideroads and sidewalks.

That means all public schools in Terrace, Kitimat, the Hazeltons and Stewart are closed.

Parents and guardians are asked to contact their school principals if they have questions or need more information. 

Centennial Christian School in Terrace is also closed today. 

PACES Day Care, the Terrace Child Development Centre and Willow Creek Child Care at the old ET Kenney School in Terrace are all closed today due to the weather. 
 
Elsewhere, school busses in the Bulkley Valley School District, serving schools in Smithers, Telkwa, Moricetown and Houston are cancelled for this morning.

The Schools WILL be open.

And in School District 91 (the Nechako Lakes District), all bus runs have been cancelled today due to weather conditions -- but schools will be open and teachers in attendance.  

Northwest Community College campuses will be OPEN today across the region.

The campuses in Hazelton, Smithers and Terrace were closed last night due to the heavy snow.   

Highway 16 between Terrace and Prince Rupert and the Nisga'a Highway between Laxgalts'ap and Gingolx are both closed due to high avalanche hazards -- the estimated time of opening for both is 2pm.

Travel advisories are in effect for Highway 16 east of Terrace through the Bulkley Valley and Lakes District, as well as Highway 118 to Granisle and Highway 35 south to Francois Lake, due to blowing snow.
