Mechanical Problem Forces Closure of Tamitik Arena

It was a rough weekend for two of Kitimat's main recreational facilities.

On Friday night, the district reported a chemical-related incident at the Sam Lindsay Aquatic Centre at around 8:45pm, forcing the closure of the pool and the brief precautionary evacuation of the adjacent Tamitik Arena.

The district says there were no patrons in the aquatic centre and none of the staff were harmed.

Both the pool and the arena were operating normally again Saturday -- but then a mechanical issue surfaced at Tamitik later that day, forcing staff to close it again and to postpone the Central Interior Hockey League game between the Kitimat Ice Demons and Terrace River Kings.

Tamitik remains closed -- and all of its regular scheduled programming is being accommodated at the Kitimat Ice Rink until further notice.

The District of Kitimat say it's currently assessing the issue, and promised to provide an update by Tuesday at noon.
