Telegraph Creek "Holdover" Fires

Kathy Brookes

The B.C. Wildlife Service is reassuring residents of Telegraph Creek that four "holdover" fires in the area are either under control or out.

On Thursday, the Service reported four fires -- all under a hectare in size -- had flared up from last summer's devastating Alkali Lake wildfire. One of those blazes had already been extinguished; firefighters were working to put out two others; and a fourth was in a wet area and being monitored.

The closest fire was 10 kilometres from the community of Telegraph Creek which lost numerous houses and others buildings in last year's massive inferno.

Overwintering fires are not unusual after such blazes.

The Wildfire Service says it's fully prepared for the potential increase in fires in the area and will take a proactive approach this season.

Ongoing overview flights are scheduled, along with infra-red scanning for hotspots.

Firefighting crews are in place in the Cassiar zone and two additional Parattack crews are available.
