Berms, turns and whoop-de-doos will be some of the exciting features included in the proposed HUB bike park in Terrace. TORCA, the Terrace Off-Road Cycling Association presented their plans last night at the city council meeting. Council agreed to write a letter of support and will refer the matter to staff for the potential of pursuing a future partnership.

The goal of the project is to provide family and youth-oriented mountain bike opportunities within the City of Terrace. The plan is to first rehabilitate"The Courthouse Trails," and add a new entrance to the park from Walsh Avenue.

The next phase of the project includes developing a new multi-use trail from Olson street to Walsh Avenue, providing a connection to the courthouse trails and allow for active transportation between the downtown and the Birch Bench.

Another connecting trail is planned to be added from Olson Avenue to the Skate Park itself. The last piece of the puzzle would be to create a skills development park near the Sportsplex. Society President, Tyler Wilkes wants to bring more riders, beginners and families to participate in the sport and says the skills development park will help achieve that.

"A skills area made of all soil and its made with rollers no jumps, its just turns and rollers to help kids youth beginners, adults everybody has fun rolling bikes through. It's used for teaching it's a great place to practice skills before you move up to the real trail network and combining this to the trail development we have there we will be able to create a progressive series of trails ranging in difficulty and variety."

The society is continuing their community fundraising efforts through corporate sponsorships, membership sales, upcoming events, and seeking applicable grant opportunities. The total project cost is estimated to be just over 126,000 dollars, but half of the project capital costs have to be secured by this Fall. The society hopes the project will be done by the summer of 2020.
