Terrace Tax Hike Proposed

Kathy Brookes

Property owners in Terrace can expect to see a significant increase in their municipal tax bill in 2020, if a proposed budget plan is approved.

A notice from city hall says it includes an 8% tax increase -- meaning an average household would pay about $120 more -- or $10 a month.

The budget draft will be presented by city staff to council on Tuesday.

The notice says much of the proposed tax increase is to address "pressures from increased economic activity in the region".

The draft budget includes spending to boost bylaw enforcement in downtown Terrace and hire another RCMP officer, two more firefighters and a parks supervisor.  It also proposes a temporary increase to "administrative capacity" to manage the impacts of LNG Canada.

Terrace residents have until January 15th to submit written feedback and a public consultation meeting is planned at the Sportsplex on January 16th.
