Terrace Women’s Resource Center Society hosting a series of seminars

An expressed need from parents within the community has the Terrace Women’s Resource Center Society and The Ministry of Children and Family Development partnering to host a series of seminars regrading children’s health. The Society’s Equity Program Coordinator, Brin Friend says the topic of choice is promoting a healthy body image.

"We are actually working with three different workshop providers in this so there will be a mental health component. There will be a dietitian as well as an emotional therapy component as well and it’s mainly focused on understanding how to have a conversation with children regarding body image."

The format of the seminars is to provide as much information, to the attendees, as possible and allow for some audience interaction.

"It's typically going to be a power point presentation with some interactive activities as well as some video clips to view. It's very informal.  It's going to be a family friendly event where we are sitting in a round circle and engaging in discussion."

Although topics of future discussions in the parenting support series haven’t been finalized, Friend says depression or seasonal affective disorder could be a possible topic.

"The series is really exciting because we are experimenting with new methods as well as bringing forward new processes and new resources, so there are providers in the area who are going to seminars down in Vancouver and they are learning all these amazing skills and this is their way to start rolling out information and resources to the public."

The free seminar will be hosted at the Terrace women’s resource center on January 9th starting at 7pm. Registering is preferred but drop ins are also welcome.
