A former labour leader is the new chairperson of the board governing the University of Northern B.C.

The UNBC Board of Governors has elected Aaron Ekman as its chair.

He's been serving as a provincially- appointed representative on the Board for two years.

Born in Terrace, Ekman has been heavily involved in B.C.'s labour movement and served as president of the labour councils covering the Prince George area and as Secretary-Treasurer of the B.C. Federation of Labour.

Ekman says he's "hardly an academic" but has developed a profound appreciation for the herculean effort Northerners expended to establish UNBC, and for how vital it remains for the identity and for the advancement of Northern communities.
