Plans for new Walnut Park School in Smithers Proceed

A Bulkley Valley School District official says plans continue to come together regarding the new Walnut Park Elementary School, to be built in Smithers next year.

Secretary-Treasurer Dave Margerm says last night's public meeting gave residents an update on the Conceptual Design of the building, and also a look at the site plan, showing where the new building will sit and how fields will be configured.

The current school will remain in use while the new school is built in the adjacent field -- and Margerm says it'll take about a year-and-a-half to construct.

"Hopefully the construction of the new school will start about April and last until about June 2020 when it'll be finished, and then September 2020 the kids will move into the new school and the old school half of the site will be fenced off and demolished and a new field will be put in where the old school is," he said.

That means students won't be in portables during the construction period.

The new school will include a neighbourhood learning centre, and Margerm says in small municipalities like Smithers, it's important to be able to share services, such as school facilities, for the community at large.
