West Fraser Curtails Sawmill Production

Workers in Smithers and Fraser Lake will be among those affected as West Fraser temporarily curtails production again at five B.C. sawmills.

The company announced late Monday that it will curtail activity at the mills for one week this month.

West Fraser estimates that will reduce lumber production by about 30-million board feet.

The company says the temporary measures are in response to sustained weak pricing in global lumber markets and high log costs.

With this latest decision, it says temporary and permanent curtailments will have cut its production by a total of 425 million board feet in the past six months.

The mills affected this month are in Smithers, Fraser Lake, Quesnel, Williams Lake and Chetwynd.
