Creative alternatives to celebrate Canada Day

Canada Day Celebrations are set to continue in Kitimat this year, but with some modifications. Significant events such as the parade and fireworks show won't be possible due to COVID-19 restrictions, but those setbacks aren't stopping the Festivals Kitimat organizers from spreading some cheer.

Festivals Kitimat  Coordinator Sara Besler  says many events and activities have either gone virtual or allow for physical distancing. Some of the activities include a town scavenger hunt, colouring contests, cookie DIY decorating and a Canadian trivia game. Besler says this year they have quite the prizes for the most patriotic house contest.

"What we are asking is the residents of Kitimat to decorate your home in red and white and show what it means to be Canadian. Our first-place prize is a 12-month family membership. That membership is to use at our recreation facility, so the arena, the pool down at River Lodge Recreation Center for the weight room and the gym, the rock wall and its a $1,300 value. We also have a second-place prize, which is a 3-month family membership, and the third prize is a welcome sign made by the Lakehouse in Kitimat."

Besler is happy to say that the water fight with Mayor Phil Germuth is still a go.

"We do have something up our sleeve; Mayor Phil Germuth is challenging the community with a curbside water gunfight. Residents of Kitimat make sure you have your water weapon of choice, water guns, water balloons, even your hose. He is going to go around the streets of Kitimat, and he will have a water gun fight with the kids, and we ask everyone to stay in their yard so that it's safe for everyone."

She reminds everyone that in order to have any of these events, the proper precautions, sanitation and social distancing will be enforced. Besler would like to remind Fitness in the Park participants to keep 6 feet apart from one another.

"So, on July 1st, we have a free class at 10 am at the River lodge soccer field. This is hosted by Strength of Steel, and all fitness levels are welcomed. No equipment is needed. Bring your water bottle, smile and get ready to sweat."
