Plans Proceed for Wood Pellet Plant in Terrace
General Biofuels Canada has hired what it calls a "leading engineering firm" to design work on a 500-thousand metric tonne-per-year wood pellte facility, to be constructed on a portion of the old Terrace Lumber Company property. It hopes to produce pellets for export by early next year.
G-B-C has entered into an agreement with the City to obtain the site for the log storage and wood pellet plant, adjacent to the C-N tracks.
The company has already received letters of intent from potential customers in Asia and Europe, who want to replace coal with carbon-neutral fuel sources.
The facility will make industrial wood pellets from local hemlock fibre sources. The company says many local forest license holders have already signed letters of intent to commit their non-saw-grade fibre to the project.
In addition, the Ministry of Forests has expressed a willingness to meet any supply shortfalls with additional license capacity if required.
Forests Minister Pat Bell said the province is strongly committed to supporting the facility's success.
Company vice president David Smith said General Biofuels views the project as central to its growth into the biomass industry.
Smith says with the team they already have on the ground in B-C, and the progress made so far, he's confident the project will bring significant growth to the area.
