Fire Chief Eyes River Levels Nervously

Terrace Emergency officials continue to keep a close eye on river and stream levels in the Terrace area.

Environment Canada continues to predict heavy rainfall for the area for the next two or three days.   And while Fire Chief Peter Weeber says traditionally, those types of systems drop the majority of their water on coastal areas, he and his crews are warning residents of flood-prone areas to be ready to move on short notice.

Weeber continues to worry about a higher-than-normal snowpack on area mountains.   The forecast is for a significant amount of snow to melt by this weekend, meaning water levels could come up rapidly, especially if a predicted heat wave arrives by Victoria Day.

Provincial officials are warning people -- espcially children -- to be very careful near rivers and streams, and watch for bank erosion.

Last year, the northwest was hit by heavy flooding, due to the same combination of factors, although Weeber is not predicting that level of flooding this year.
