Cudos For Winter Games Organizers

Local News
The local organizing committee is receiving high marks from the visitors, following the 2010 BC Winter Games which wrapped up Sunday in Terrace and Kitimat.

Henry Boas, Provincial Sports Organizer for Judo, says the Skeena Junior Secondary School venue for his sport was terrific.
"Excellent! This is the best venue we've ever had, as far as I'm concerned -- and I've been to every one," said Boas.

The games' sports chair for judo, Bernie Mattie, echoed those comments, and also praised the way everyone came together on the sport.
"The venue was incredibly awesome, the volunteers spectacular, the hostesses were absolutely wonderful. Again, I can't say enough about the volunteers, for the city of Terrace. Everybody pulled so hard together to make it such a wonderful experience for the kids, and the coaches and the officials that had come up."

Last night, the games committee held a special Appreciation night, to salute those volunteers.

As for the competitions, the northwest zone finished well back in the medal standings, but competitors enjoyed themselves nonetheless.

Leading the way for the northwest were Brianna Brochez of Burns Lake, who won gold and bronze in Biathlon. Her brother Nick took a silver in that event, while Danielle Weme of Smithers won bronze. Kate Woods of Smithers won bronze in cross country skiing.

In team sports, the northwest team, skipped by Ryan Baruta of Kitimat, won bronze in boys curling, while a Kitimat team took silver in boys karate.
Two Fort St James athletes won a total of five gold medals --- Jamie MacDonald took three of them in girls speed skating, while MacLeod Smith won two in archery. A Vanderhoof team won bronze in table tennis at Kitsumkalum Hall, while Leah Forsdick of Vanderhoof won gold and bronze in biathlon.

Terrace Woman Organizes Fund For Her Native Chile

Local News

The catastrophe in Chile, caused by Saturday's massive earthquake and the resulting tsunami, has touched a Terrace woman personally. Angelica Powell is from that South American country, and her family is still there. So she and her husband Michael are organizing a local fund-raising effort to help.

She told us yesterday just getting information on her own family has been a nightmare. "There's been a network of help, but no possible penetration at the main area where my family was, my sons and my two grandchildren, but luckily we got good news --- they're good! They're alive that's the main thing"
Powell says she's confident Terrace residents will help out, as they did for victims of Haiti's earthquake and the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of a few years ago.
"Terrace people is good people," she said, "and I'm confident they know hard times, because we all our somewhere else, and we come in here to work, like anybody else, but it is needed, they are there."

The trust account (Number 7177454) is at the Northern Savings Credit Union.
