Groups opposed to the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline through northern B.C. have new fodder for their campaign after a pipeline leak in Michigan.

A ruptured Enbridge pipeline between Indiana and Sarnia, Ontario has leaked three-million litres of oil, some of which has flowed into the Kalamazoo River, coating birds and fish.

Carrier Sekani Tribal Council Vice-Chief Terry Teegee says this spill will be front and centre when review panel hearings begin into the company's proposed pipeline to Kitimat this fall.

Michigan state officials say the oil stretches for about 26 kilometres downstream of Monday's spill.

Enbridge says it has about 150 employees and contractors working to contain it.
