Pacific Northern Gas says a second proposal for liquified natural gas exports from Kitimat could be a "first".

A company called Maverick LNG Holdings wants to use new technology installed on a vessel called the Margaret Hill to cool natural gas to a liquid state for shipping.

In an application filed with the B.C. Utilities Commission, P.N.G. says it would be the first floating LNG operation in the world.

The B.C. Utilities Commission has begun examining P.N.G.'s application for offering Maverick unused capacity in its existing pipeline for the project, which might last just a few years.

A couple of public interest groups -- the B-C Public Interest Advocacy Centre and B-C Old Age Pensioners Association -- are asking about the impact on the rates paid by existing P.N.G. customers.

P.N.G. is also working with Kitimat LNG on plans to build a new pipeline for a land-based LNG export terminal at Kitimat.
